Calling
Published October 31, 2024
When we talk about calling, it’s easy to get focused on our future careers or roles we’re preparing for, like being pastors, counselors, or community leaders. But our first calling, the one that never changes, is to abide in Christ. Knowing that we have a Caller grounds us in that primary calling, and every other calling we have flows from it.
Secondary callings—like your career, family roles, or ministry—might come and go. They’re meaningful, but they don’t define us. I know how tempting it is to wrap our identities around these roles, especially when they’re fulfilling or challenging. I’ve been there, wondering what I would be after leaving the mission field. God reminded me that before any title, I belong to Him, and that truth steadies me every day.
At Asbury, you’re surrounded by people who are wrestling with similar questions, ready to support you in exploring your secondary callings. Don’t miss the chance to tap into the wisdom of this community—professors, fellow students, staff, alumni—all can help you discern God’s next steps for you. And if you need extra clarity, the Career and Calling Center is here to walk with you. We’ve got resources designed to help you grow in clarity, not just about your work but about who you’re called to be.
