Church Failure
Published October 31, 2024
It’s hard not to feel disappointed, even discouraged, when we hear of yet another failure within the church—whether it’s a moral failing, financial misconduct, or the mistreatment of others. These moments hurt especially when they happen in a faith community we’ve called home or involve people we know personally. These feelings of pain and frustration are natural and can even reflect our desire for justice and integrity within the church.
But there’s an important perspective to keep in mind: no church, leader, or organization is without flaws. What sets us apart as Christians isn’t perfection but our commitment to repentance and reconciliation. This is the heart of Jesus’ message: “Repent, and believe in the good news.” When the church falls short, we’re reminded that God calls us to be agents of reconciliation, striving to heal and restore what’s broken.
In these difficult times, let’s not shoulder the burden alone. Processing pain and disappointment with a counselor or pastoral caregiver can be invaluable. And where possible, let’s encourage one another—and even the church leaders who have failed—toward true repentance and the healing power of grace. It’s a path that calls us back to what makes us distinctively Christian, even in the midst of hurt.
